The Birds and the Bees

Well, today was a special weekend for myself and Jessica.  We had a special mother daughter overnight to talk about puberty and the birds and the bees.  I had been doing some research and read that 8 years old is a good time to have "the talk".  And having just done it, I couldn't agree more!  If you asked me a few years ago, I probably would have said "no way, too early!".  My husband and I decided it was the time for a few or reasons:

~ We wanted to be sure she first heard about it from us.  I'd like to think that we can protect her from everything but she is at school all day and I didn't want us to be naive to think that the topic would never come up.

~  We wanted her to be informed before her body started to go through changes.  We didn't want her to feel surprised or fearful.  God made you and gave you this body and this is part of growing up.

~  She's been asking questions for awhile and while I have generally answered things, I also wanted to be clear about it.

~  Kids this age are so matter of fact about stuff.  She got the information, understood it, was happy she knew about it and was also grossed out a bit.  Mission accomplished!

I am so glad we made it a special night.  We stayed at a hotel, had room service, watched TV together, played scrabble, painted nails....basically a mommy/daughter pajama party.

We'll do the same for Lauren too.  We did discuss everything in light of God's plan for families.  She knows that this is just the starting point and not just a one time conversation.  This is an ongoing dialog and she can come to us at any time with any questions she might have.  She will always get a loving and honest answer.

We did give her a book about how a girl's body changes and tips for taking care of herself.  She loves that she has it.

Everyone needs to make the right choices for their family about stuff like this but I am glad we didn't stick our heads in the sand about it.

Oh and how can I forget Lauren, she got special time with daddy which included dinner and the chance to see the movie Frozen....again.  She loved it.  There was also a lot of game playing and snuggles.  She was a happy girl.
